Tara works as a secondary school teacher and is also studying for a Masters in Marketing, after graduating with a degree in English & History from the University of Queensland, and ultimately plans to work in marketing for the not-for-profit sector. The 27-year-old is a member of the Queensland Irish Association, plays mixed touch football, follows rugby (she travelled to New Zealand for the rugby world cup Ireland v Australia match), soccer as she is an avid Liverpool FC fan, and has represented Queensland at national level in athletics when she was younger. She is passionate about human rights and is an active member of the St Vincent de Paul Society through which she tutors a refugee family from Burma helping them with daily activities that we take for granted. She has travelled extensively through Europe and South-East Asia, and India is next on her list. Tara was born in Dublin and moved to Australia when she was five-years-old, returning to live between Dublin and Galway for three years in 2006. One of her most memorable experiences is attending the Cannes Film Festival as a production assistant and being ‘papped’ on the red carpet. However this has now be surpassed by being crowned the 2012 Rose of Tralee. Tara’s father, Ronnie is from Dublin and her mother, Carmen is from the Philippines.

She loves working with children with special needs and in the future hopes to spend some time working in developing countries. While at university Aisling worked as a superhero called Captain Starlight for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, driving around in a purple bus visiting children in hospital and entertaining them with magic tricks, making balloon animals, playing the ukulele and running a TV show. The 22-year-old enjoys playing sport and keeping fit, is a member of a women’s hockey team and takes part in fun runs around Brisbane. She also enjoys going to the beach, surfing, reading, travelling, spending time with family and friends, and is an active member of the Queensland Irish Support Organisation. Aisling’s father is from Co Clare and her mother is from Co Galway, and she lived in Ireland when she was young for two years when her father inherited his father’s farm.

The 2011 Queensland Rose of Tralee Entrant chosen to represent us in Kerry was Tara Talbot.  Tara delighted the committee members, supporters, family and friends who travelled to the festival when on August 23rd she was announced the 2011 International Rose of Tralee.  It has been a huge honour to have our Queensland Rose chosen as the overall winner in Tralee and we are extremely proud of Tara as she embarks on this exciting and very special year.  We wish her luck and look forward to her return from Ireland in May 2012 when we will choose our 25th Queensland Rose of Tralee and continue the proud tradition of the Queensland Roses.

History of the "Rose of Tralee"

The "Rose of Tralee International Festival" has been held each August since 1959 at Tralee, Co Kerry, Ireland. Back in 1959 there were five entrants and the budget was $1500. Today there are thirty-two entrants and the budget is well over $1M. It is now one of Europe's foremost festivals attracting over 300,000 visitors from all over the world and returns over about $28M to Tralee and the surrounding districts during the six day Festival.

The Festival is justifiably famous for its variety of entertainment staged on the streets and in the Tralee Festival Dome. The highlight of the festivities is the presentation of the Roses on live television over two nights to an estimated audience of millions, the year 2000 breaking all records for RTE Ireland.

The International Rose of Tralee Quest is now a world-renowned contest for girls of Irish ancestry from the USA, Canada, Europe, The Middle East, New Zealand, Ireland, Great Britain, Japan and Australia, who travel to Tralee each year to compete for the coveted title of INTERNATIONAL ROSE OF TRALEE.

The week offers bright lights, beautiful girls, crowds, music, song, dance and the "Craic" is just great, all of which goes into creating an atmosphere of fun for young and old alike.

The Festival is also an occasion for Irish communities from all around the globe to come together. The centres take great pride in their "Roses", who act as ambassadors for their Irish communities.

Girls who take part in the quest must be aged between 18-28, single and of Irish birth or ancestry. They are judged not on looks alone, but more on personality, poise, charm, sincerity and ability to represent their home country in Ireland and Ireland in their home country. The judges are asked to keep in their mind the words of the song which inspired this competition:

"She was lovely and fair as the Rose of the Summer,
Yet it was not her beauty alone that one me,
Oh no, 'twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning,
That made me love Mary the Rose of Tralee."

Their task is to choose yet another with the truth in her eyes to be the INTERNATIONAL ROSE OF TRALEE.

The Rose of Tralee (lyrics)

Oh the pale moon was rising above the green mountain,
The sun was declining beneath the blue sea.
When I strayed with my love o’er the pure crystal fountain,
That stands in the beautiful Vale of Tralee.

She was lovely and fair as the Rose of the Summer,
Yet it was not her beauty alone that won me,
Oh no, ‘twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning,
That made me love Mary the Rose of Tralee.

The cool shades of evening their mantles were spreading,
And Mary, all smiling, sat listening to me.
The moon thro’ the valley her pale rays was shedding,
When I won the heart of the Rose of Tralee.

Tho’ lovely and fair the Rose of the summer,
Yet ‘twas not her beauty alone that won me.
Oh! No ‘twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning,
That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.
